Image P: Dogs sometimes served as sentries for their owners’ graves.

The lion is a symbolic guardian of the cemetery. These stone sentinels represented courage, honor, and power, and usually appear in pairs with one asleep and the other watchfully guarding the grave (image Q). Egyptian sphinxes were popular during the Neo-Egyptian era of the 1920s and may be used instead of lions. Sphinxes (image R) may be paired as a male and female, or two males may patrol the front of a tomb.

Image Q: Lions represented courage and honor, and were often stationed outside graves.
